Dr. Cho, Pastor of the world’s largest church in Korea, wrote in his book The Fourth Dimension, “Before you can be changed, you must change your language.  If you do not change your language, you cannot change yourself.  If you want your children changed, you must first teach them to use the proper language.  If you want rebellious and irresponsible youth changed into responsible adults, you must teach them new language”. When you tell someone he is stupid and never amount to anything, you actually pronounce a condemnation.

King David knew the creative power of speech.  He prayed “Set a watch O Lord, before my mouth, keep the door of my lips” (Ps 141:3). So powerful in our speech that Solomon declared “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love  it will eat its fruit” (Prov. 18:21).

Jesus emphasised the importance of our words when He said, “Every idle word that men speak they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement”. He further warned “Your words will be used to judge you to declare you either innocent or guilty”. “We are warned to be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger” (James 1:19). “If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect (complete, mature) man”  (James 3:2).

Let your speech be always with grace seasoned with salt.  As salt improves taste, what Christians say and do should likewise leave a good taste for others.  Christian should be courteous, honest, compassionate – exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit. Eph. 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up accordingly to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”.  Yes, the smallest but the largest trouble maker in all the world is the tongue.  But it does not have to be a trouble maker!  God can use our tongue to direct others into the way of life.  Give God your tongue and your heart  each day and ask Him to use you to be a blessing to others.

Amen.
