Beloved, Christ is the One who builds His church! Having made such a definite statement here, I want to share that it is interesting to note that in no way did God say that people are not capable of building the church. But the important point I would like to emphasise is that God wants us to start right. He wants to ensure the church’s foundation is built on the sound understanding and application of Jesus Christ and bible truths!

That is why Ephesians 4:11-17 states what God did then, He will continue to do to this day—and that is, He will give His church the gifts of at least five types of leaders — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers (v11) — to train and equip the rest of the believers to do the work of the church ministry.

Why? Because the responsibility of keeping the church focused on Christ rests with the right leadership. Beloved, keep this thought as I want us reminded too of an earlier verse 7 that assured us– to each one is given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift –suggesting that every member of the body of Christ is called and expected to perform ministry within the scope of his or her role and gifts.

Now, returning to verse 11, let us understand how God has purposed the five leader gifts to help complete church members’ growth, and also to equip them to serve.

The five leader types and their varying roles are:

i) apostle–to pioneer and establish new works and new teachers:

ii) prophet–to speak God’s word to inspire, correct and motivate

iii) evangelist–to share Christ with outsiders and train others to do so

iv) pastor–to shepherd, guide and guard God’s people as they serve

v) teacher – to train God’s people in the truth and teach others to do so

When God provides and the church fills these five lead offices, other members will in turn be equipped and trained for ministry working within Christ’s body, the church.

This process will continue until everyone moves “rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God; and as fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ!” (v 12-13, The Message Bible)

Beloved, God has spoken. He will provide and equip us for service. Let us ready ourselves to work together. Remove whatever differences among us so we can stay united, focused and be equipped with sound Bible doctrine, speaking always the truth in love and of the saving knowledge and life eternal with Jesus! Amen!

“He is also head of the Body, the Church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything” Colossians 1:18
