Knowing and Worshipping God (Exodus 20:1-6)

I think the 10 Commandments should be regularly studied because we often struggle in our walk of faith and it often comes down to one cause: you and I don’t really know God. . we don’t make the effort to know Him; we can’t grasp the full extent of His glory, and sometimes we are guilty of trying to reshape God into something we want, a God that shares the values we have.

When God called Moses to deliver the people from Egypt, Moses asked God for His name. In reply (Exodus 3:14) God tells Moses His name which is “I AM WHO I AM”. What this means is, “I AM WHO I AM.. not whatever you want Me to be; I’m not a lump of clay that you can mold to your liking.  I AM WHO I AM”

And before He issued the 10 Commandments, God said, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (Exodus 20:1-2). God does not appeal to His people to obey Him on the basis of His raw power but on the basis of His redemptive love for them.

Many people view God’s commandments as orders from a God who is intent on forcing His unappealing will on us. If you think that of God, you will want to run far away from Him. Moses and the people of Israel had experienced the grace of God in their extraordinary deliverance from slavery in the land of Egypt so when they heard the 10 commandments, they heard it like coming from a very caring Father.

Jesus, our God, took on human flesh in order to bring us a greater deliverance than just rescue from physical slavery. Jesus came into the world to set you and I free from the slavery of sin, death, hell and eternal damnation. And Jesus who was crucified in order to set us free says to you and me, “I am the Lord your God… I give Myself to redeem you from the hands of the devil… don’t put any other gods before Me”

Has God been displaced in your heart? What or who fights for your attention these days? Has something or someone gained a controlling position in your life?

God is the “I AM WHO I AM” – do you know Him and do you worship Him as He desires?
