Feelings vs Truth

Mar 30, 17 Feelings vs Truth

Is where you are a result of your feelings? Or a result of God’s will?
Feelings: Unstable

Emotions – based by experience

Fit of anger, felt touched by a movie
Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. (Ephesians 4:31 NKJV)

Word of God – stable with truths and promises

1) Results of being led by feelings

– affects how we face things

– affects faith

– affects future

for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:20 NKJV)

Negative feelings: It affects How we face things
Positive feelings: indulging in things to feel good- addictions
Self condemnation is a work of the Devil that denies us the love of God
For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1 John 3:20 NKJV)

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8 – 2:9 NKJV)
Feelings affect our faith in service

Then Moses said to the LORD, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” (Exodus 4:10 NKJV)
So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” (Judges 6:15 NKJV)
Then said I:  “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.” (Jeremiah 1:6 NKJV)
In areas of Worship

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 NKJV)

“You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power;  For You created all things,  And by Your will they exist and were created.” (Revelation 4:11 NKJV)
Affects our future

There is a way that seems right to a man,  But its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12 NKJV)

A man’s heart plans his way,  But the LORD directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 NKJV)

Resolve to be Led by Truth: Verses to encourage

Say to those who are fearful-hearted,  “Be strong, do not fear!  Behold, your God will come with vengeance,  With the recompense of God; He will come and save you.” (Isaiah 35:4 NKJV)
Why are you cast down, O my soul?  And why are you disquieted within me?  Hope in God;  For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God. (Psalm 43:5 NKJV)
Even Jesus was discouraged but He surrendered His feelings to God

And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me (Matthew 26:37 – 26:38 NKJV)

He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39 NKJV)

Application: How to surrender your feelings

Lord I feel… xxx but Your word says… and I want to obey

When we struggle to forgive someone

When we choose a job or partner

When we struggle with anger (negative emotions)

When we feel afraid

When we are tempted to indulge in sin

The Bible calls us to walk by faith; not by feelings.

– Have the Word of God instead of feelings

How often do you read the Bible?

– Surrender our feelings to God and use the Word of God

Surrender to His will and live out His will
